"You stay mauka or makai side?"

A little bit of pigin opens up this post for Chef Nobu's newest creation out on the Santa Monica side...or should I say, the makai side?

"Kai" supposedly means ocean in Hawaiian and thus, the new name for the new restaurant near the ocean in Santa Monica. I didn't think Chef Nobu thought of li'l ole Hawaii at all - but it's nice that he does. I've never been to the place yet - don't know if I'll ever since my trendying days are over but it sounds like fun...though it also sounds like it could be a little over done polynesian style. But I shouldn't judge before I see it. So if you're out on the west side - go try ma'Kai or known just by "Kai" by the namesake sign posted outside the restaurant and let me know how it fares.

Hawaii Rejoice! Beard Papa's is here!

Oh my - if there was any reason to get a girl to move back to Hawaii, this would be one of the reasons...(courtesy of Rokes comment previous):
"Ooh, speaking of desserts, I FINALLY tried a Beard Papa's creampuff!! OMG...SO good. We got one vanilla and one coffee, but the vanilla one was much better. The crisp outside was a surprise since I've always had soft creampuffs. I like it better than Liliha's Cocopuffs now! There are 2 open in the Waikiki area! What a treat! ;)" -Rokes

Oh...my...gosh! Did you say B-E-T-T-E-R than Liliha's Cocopuffs? Daaaang. I'm telling ya, the original fusion of "pie crust" and regular puff pastry makes for an amazing texture! The world just gets better and better doesn't it? Well...some things...

Nothing for Free in LA? I beg to differ...

UNbelieveable! Something free in L.A.?! You've GOT to be kidding me.

But yes, it's true. And they're called Fallen Fruit. An organization dedicated to mapping out the locations of public fruit trees in L.A. where fruit is free and ripe for the pickins. What a novel idea! Why buy it when you can get it for free...and offset some of them taxes that you pay eh? Yeah - farmers market people ain't gonna be happy about this. But what's even more interesting is that they encourage private property owners to plant fruit trees on their perimeters and then submit the location of their property for the public to come by and pick...I don't know about you but don't you think that's a bit scary? Especially in L.A.?! hahahaha, it's a novel idea still and just thought it was cool to share. But like all things in L.A., they'll somehow make this thing not free someday...

Wanna be a Superstar?!

Oh man...all you wanna be chefs-on-tv peeps...here's your chance. JustJenn just told me about this...Food Networks' link to applying for the next Food Network Star. Yes, yes, this could be YOU...that is, if you meet their requirements. What average joe or joette has 30 original recipes? what recipe is really original these days with almost everything known to man is on the internet? *sigh* I don't have 30 original recipes...I'm not even sure I have one. But I looove to cook and I loooove to talk - especially about food that I like. Who am I? I am a replicator of food that I love. I am no original chef...though with a bit of time and experimentation in the kitchen, maybe I could be. "I have no formal training"...so THUS I don't have 30 original recipes. Geez. Anyway - maybe the more qualified chefs out there have a much better chance at this than I do. I am just a cook in training. Maybe Sue (the experimentor) - maybe Jenn (the creator) - maybe Guy (le 808 Chef! You gotta tell him about this Rokes! I think he'd be perfect!) But anyways, thanks for thinking of me Jenn but sadly, I don't think I qualify. =(

yay for Chocolate lovers!

You wouldn't believe it - but chocolate lover's dreams have finally been realized. Chocolate has made it to a new "Healing Food" pyramid developed by the University of Michigan. At the very tip of this pyramid you'll find an empty triangle, "reserved for a 'special treat that is healing for you,' to be indulged in occasionally" the article says and low and behold, there stands CHOCOLATE. Ofcourse, it's labeled as optional. =( Too bad they didn't list it as a weekly thang, lol. Visit the article and the pyramid - see what the new fad in food pyramids is today.

Bling Bling Kitchen baby

Daaaang...my mouth waters everytime I watch Iron Chef. Last I watched, they were showing the Abalone battle. Oh man - do I loooove Abalone. But it's so darn expensive! "If memory serves me right..." I think I remember the commentator saying that each abalone piece was worth $100 a pop! OH - MY - ...one of the chefs had 60 pieces! Not to mention all the other extra ingredients available to the iron chefs during the matches like caviar, truffles and my favorite...foie gras. Oooo - and I just looked at the schedule and there's a foie gras battle coming up. Boy - I would love the Iron Chef kitchen just for the type of ingredients stocked in the pantry.

Yeah - with that said and my love for double ovens and warmer drawers, my fiance won't let me anywhere near the kitchen to do remodels or filling that pantry...at least not with his money. oh well...guess my addiction to my fantasy that is Iron Chef will just have to do. :)
